In a further sign of the general crappification of the CBS News Division, it was announced on March 20 that the owner, Paramount Skydance Corporation, would be firing the CBS News Radio Team and closing operations CBS News provided content to more than1,000 radio stations throughout the United States. The service was founded as United Independent Broadcasters in 1927, and the following year, William S. Paley bought half-interest and whipped it into one of the Big Three radio networks (the others being NBC Radio Network and Mutual Broadcasting System). CBS famously broke the news of the Lindbergh kidnapping, the 1932 presidential election (P.S. Roosevelt won!), and Edward R. Murrow’s World War II reports from London; their World News Roundup was the longest-running news show on radio or TV in the US. A memo from CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss and CBS News president/executive editor Tom Cibrowski announced, “We understand how difficult this news is for our staff and their colleagues . . . While this was a necessary decision, it was not an easy one. A shift in radio station programming strategies, coupled with challenging economic realities, has made it impossible to continue the service.” I repeat, I hate this stupid century.
