Theater composer and writer Claire van Kampen, 71, died of cancer on Jan. 18. Beginning in 2000, she wrote the scores for such Broadway productions as True West, Boeing-Boeing, La Bete, Richard III, and Twelfth Night; she also wrote the play and music Farinelli and the King (which earned her a Tony nomination). Born in London, Van Kampen studied at the Royal College of Music, and joined the Royal National Theatre. She also served on the boards of the Globe and the Old Vic Theatres. Van Kampen was married to actor Mark Rylance—who appeared in many of her productions—and all her obits (and her Wikipedia page) headlined her as “Mark Rylance’s wife.” Now, I like Mark Rylance as much as the next audience member, but that strikes me as a bit of a backhanded slap at Claire.
