Sad news that the old-movie fan newspaper Classic Images and its sister magazine, Films of the Golden Age, are folding with the retirement of their tireless editor, Bob King; October 2025 will be their final issues. This is heartbreaking for me; I started writing for them in 1991 (many of my articles were anthologized in the books Golden Images and Bride of Golden Images). CI was founded as The 8mm Collector by Samuel K. Rubin in 1962; it had become Classic Images by the time Bob took over as editor and general manager in 1991 (Films of the Golden Age was a quarterly, founded in 1995). CI and FGA covered show-business obits, releases of old films on 8mm, then video, then disc and Blu-Ray; it had book reviews (happily for me, their reviewer, Laura Wagner, liked my work!); it featured articles about (and interviews with) stars and bit players alike—gave me the opportunity to talk with Anita Page, Margaret O’Brien, Ann Miller, Esther Ralston, and many others. Bob King has earned a long, happy retirement, but how I will miss Classic Images and Films of the Golden Age!
