Choreographer Dave Scott, 52, died on June 16. Scott was dancing in a club when discovered by hip-hop artist Rob Base’s manager, and he went on tour with Base as a dancer. His first onscreen job was choreographing Good Burger (1997), and he went on to work on such films as You Got Served, Coach Carter, Stomp the Yard, Made of Honor, Step Up 3D, and High Strung, as well as TV’s Dance Your Ass Off and So You Think You Can Dance. Scott said, “I’m self-taught, from Compton, California. I learned how to dance by watching TV. I honed in on my style by watching old musicals with the Nicholas Brothers and these different artists.” He added that “Originality is taking the basis of what you’ve learned and not copying, but turning them into your style, your expertise. Everybody learns from something, everybody learns from someone. It’s really honing in to your individuality, like taking what’s inside of you and bringing it out.”
