Italian actor Franco Merli, best known for his work in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s films, died on May 17. He was 68. Merli was working at a gas station when Pasolini “discovered” him, featuring him in Arabian Nights and Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom. He went on to appear in La Collegiale, Ugly Dirty and Bad, and Il Malato Immaginario. He left acting in 1979, being unable to separate his career from Pasolini. Merli spent the rest of his working life as a bank employee.
