Scottish kiddie-show host Glen Michael, 99, died on July 9. The son of a butler and a cabaret singer, during WWII Michael joined ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association, familiarly known as “Every Night Something Awful”), and went on to act in several films and TV shows, as well as in pantomimes and legitimate theater. But he is best remembered for starring in (and writing) Glen Michael's Cartoon Cavalcade, which ran from 1966-92. When that popular show was cancelled, Michael took it on tour, also hosting a weekly radio show. Of Cavalcade, he told journalist Ali Howard, “In those days, it wasn't a children's programme, it was a family programme and the mother, the father, the granny and grandpa and the kids all watched the one set. Now everybody's got sets all over the house and different gadgets. They all separate and do their own thing, which I think is wrong." Among his survivors is son Chris Buckland, a film and TV editor.
