Filipino actress Gloria Romero, 91, died in Manila on Jan. 25. One of the major stars of Philippine cinema, she began her career as an extra in the early 1950s, she worked her way up to supporting roles and then leads, either winning or being nominated for numerous FAMAS awards. Romero and her brother, actor Tito Galla (who died in 1979) were born in Colorado to Filipino and part-Spanish parents; they were visiting the Philippines when WWII broke out and they were forced to settle there. Romero began acting in light comedy or musical roles, but shifted to dramas as she aged; she was noted for her low-key, naturalistic style of acting. In addition to more than 200 movies, she costarred in such TV series as Kokey, Munting Heredera, Juan Happy Love Story, Meant to Be, Kambal, Karibal and, most recently, Daig Kayo Ng Lola Ko (why do foreign titles not initial-cap any but the first word? That is just wrong). Still chic and lovely in her later years, she was widely hailed as the last of the Golden Age Filipino Stars. Actress Iza Calzado said of Romero, “I’d like to be like Ms. Gloria Romero who started young but look at her now—still energetic and very much around. Actually, it's not just about her aging, it's how people respect her. You know when people talk about Gloria Romero, they talk about how nice she is.”
