Hudson’s Bay, the Canadian-owned department store chain, announced it will be closing its remaining six stores by June. "Hudson's Bay extends its sincerest gratitude to its dedicated associates and loyal customers for their overwhelming support over the years and throughout this chapter," the company said. Hudson’s Bay was chartered by Charles II to trade in beaver pelts between England and the Canadian colonies. By the 19th century, they had expanded into housewares and clothing, and expanded southward into the US. More recently, there came buyouts, over-expansion and the Internet, and the gig was up. I have never shopped at Hudson’s Bay (I’m a Vermont Country Store girl), but it’s always sad to see a store go under, especially one that’s 354 years old. Wanamaker’s, Lord & Taylor, Altman’s, Strawbridge's—all gone. Where is a lady supposed to buy grown-up clothing?
