Country comedienne and singer Lulu Roman, 78, died on April 23. Abandoned to an orphanage as a baby, by the time she was a teen, she was performing as “Lulu Roman, the World’s Biggest Go-Go Dancer (one of her bosses was Jack Ruby). Roman is best known for her long stint on Hee Haw (1969-92, with a few seasons off for drug problems and becoming “born again”). She was first one of the Hee Haw Honeys (usually as a human sight gag), then a stand-up and finally a singer. She also appeared (sometimes as herself) in such TV shows and movies as The Love Boat and Touched by an Angel, and a cooking show, Cookin’ it up with Lulu, 2015). Of Hee Haw, Roman recalled, “The critics bombed us. Bad! But there were a whole lot more people that laughed at it, instead of turning the dial. They stayed and they laughed.”
