
Sri Lankan movie star and politician Malini Fonseka, 78, died on May 24. Fonseka was already an award-winning stage actress when she entered films in 1963. She appeared in more than 70 movies through 2021; Fonseka was elected Most Popular Actress 12 times, and in 2010, CNN named her as one of Asia's 25 greatest film performers. She came from a “movie family,” her siblings, nieces and nephews also being in the business. Fonseka was elected to the Sri Lankan Parliament as a candidate for the United People's Freedom Alliance (which stands for “Social Justice, Good Governance, Human Rights, Freedom of Education and Expression, Right for Information and above all Freedom on Social Media in Sri Lanka"); she was in office from 2010-15. She was married from 1986-2011 to actor Lucky Dias.
