Argentine tango dancer and choreographer María Nieves, 91, has died, her family announced on April 19. Nieves and her dance partner Juan Carlos Copes starred in the 1983 musical Tango Argentino (they were also married from 1964-73, and continued dancing together after their amicable divorce). The pair met as teens, and were soon dancing together (among other things), and eventually toured through Central America, Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, becoming the Vernon and Irene Castle of the tango. The pair also toured through the US, in nightclubs, theaters, and on TV; they hit Broadway with Tango Argentino in 1986. Copes died in 2012; Nieves kept dancing and acting till recently. Nieves said that "The first time I danced the tango, it entered my skin through my feet, passed from my skin to my blood and through my blood to my heart. It requires no acrobatics, you simply have to devote yourself to your heartbeat.”
