Matthew Posey, 1958 – 2026
Character actor, director, and playwright Matthew Posey, 68, died on Oct. 2. Posey founded Dallas’s Ochre House Theater and was a mainstay of that city’s experimental theater scene. Posey wrote, directed, and produced more than 40 plays there, including Morphing, Dr. Bobagonush, Moving Creatures, Mrs. Haggardly, Bill, Original Man, and Soft Noodle Map. He also acted in more than 50 movies and TV shows, often as burly, bearded characters. He was seen in No Country for Old Men, Lonesome Dove, True Stories, A Killing in a Small Town, Sinatra (playing Harry James, who was neither bearded nor burly), L.A. Law, Walker Texas Ranger, In Plain Sight, and this year’s Brothers, among many other projects. In 2017, Posey was shot in the face and thigh while leaving a bar; he joked to police that it must have been a theater critic (he returned to work five weeks after the shooting; his attacker was never found).
