Mike Rinder, the very cute Australian ex-Scientologist who costarred in Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, died of esophageal cancer on Jan. 5. He was 69. He was raised by Scientologist parents, and rose through the ranks. Rinder was appointed Office of Special Affairs (basically, the Reich Minister of Propaganda). “If the Church decided someone was an enemy and needed to be silenced or destroyed,” Rinder said, “it was my job and I did it ... Everything from following them 24 hours a day to having people camped outside their door, to being vilified on the internet, to following them wherever they traveled, I was the guy.” He fled Scientology in 2007 (of course, his family “disconnected” from him) and after that was seen on many talk shows and documentaries, and authored several books. He was best known as the Nick to Leah Remini’s Nora on the fascinating A&E series (2016-19) Scientology and the Aftermath. Of his life as a post-Scientologist, Rinder said that “I don’t think that I will ever be able to shed this particular job. People contact me every single day asking for help.”
