British actor Paul Danan, 46, died on Jan. 16. No cause was yet announced, but he was found hours before he was due in court on drug charges. Danan trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, and the high point of his career came playing bad boy Sol on the soap Hollyoaks, from 1997-2001. After leaving that show, he still found the occasional acting jobs (The Queen’s Nose, Casualty, Are We Dead Yet, Doll House, and stage work in Desires of Frankenstein). But it was mostly a parade of tatty reality shows, drugs, and homelessness. Danan later regretted leaving Hollyoaks: “You wanted to go off and play different roles, especially when you're a real actor. I wanted to go to L.A. and I did. And I got very close to some very big, big films. But the rejection . . . the one thing I hate in life is rejection. I chose the one job in the world that that gives you that! But at the same time, I love it more than anything, just to be there on set and to be part of that world. It is everything that I always trained for. Acting is a tough job and I think you don't realize how lucky you are when you're in a soap and you've got the closest thing to a nine to five job in acting that you can get.”
