British actor Steve Hodson, 77, died on Feb. 16. The Yorkshire-born Hodson was best-known for playing one of the leads in the early ‘70s children’s show (also popular with adults) Follyfoot, which took place on a Yorkshire horse farm. Hodson also appeared through the decades in such TV shows as Z Cars, All Creatures Great & Small (the 1980 version), Jackanory, and Juliet Bravo. He was uncomfortable before the cameras, though, and from 1975-2011 he acted with the BBC radio drama repertory company—isn’t that wonderful? I wish we still had something like that in the US. He also acted onstage, both on the West End and in repertory and fringe groups. After taking part in a 40th anniversary event for Follyfoot, he told writer Anthony Hayward, “I had no idea what it meant to the fans. They remembered so much more about it than we did. At the end my daughters said to me, ‘We knew you’d been famous in a children’s television series, but we never knew the extent. We’ve got a whole new respect for you, Pops!’ Suddenly they realised what it all had meant.”
