Actress and philanthropist Susan Kendall Newman, 72, died on August 2. The daughter of Paul Newman and his first wife, Jacqueline Witte, she appeared on Broadway in We Interrupt This Program, and in the films Slap Shot, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, and A Wedding; she also produced the TV-movie The Shadow Box, which starred her step-mother, Joanne Woodward. Newman gave much of her life over the various causes, including drug and alcohol abuse, juvenile justice, environmental preservation, and healthcare. Her family wrote that she “will be remembered for her sharp wit and tongue, generosity and love, and her devotion to family and friends. She will be very much missed.”
