Terry Ree, of the comedy team Williams and Ree (also known as “The Indian and the White Guy”), died on Dec. 21. He was 75. Ree was “The Indian”—Sioux—and both members were accomplished guitarists and singers, like the Smothers Brothers. According to their website, Williams and Ree “eschew political correctness and conformity,” so I YouTubed them with trepidation, as “political correctness” usually just means “not being an offensive jerk.” I found their routines a little too cornpone for my haughty dowager tastes, but they did have a loyal fan base, so good for Williams and Ree. The team formed in the late 1960s, and opened for such acts as Garth Brooks, The Oak Ridge Boys, and Tim McGraw, and were seen frequently on The Nashville Network. They played at fests, casinos and jamborees throughout the US and Canada, and regularly hosted the Craven Country Jamboree and Country Thunder festivals. Williams and Ree continued performing till Ree’s illness took them off the boards earlier this year.
