Korean pop singer Choi Whee-sung, who performed as Wheesung, was found dead in his apartment on March 10. He was 43, and the cause was given as “cardiac arrest,” which is useless (one could truthfully say that Louis XVIII and Marie-Antoinette died of “cardiac arrest”). Wheesung had a lovely, powerful voice, and the boyish looks which make for a K-Pop star. He began as a backup singer, then sang with such bands as A4 and MAME (they coaxed the blues right out of the horn), then branched out as a solo artist. Wheesung emceed a Korean Idol-type TV show, and performed in concert worldwide. By 2012, he was taking drugs, he said, to relieve herniated disc surgery, a dislocated shoulder, and psoriasis, and served a year in prison. “At a certain point,” he said, “music didn’t bring me joy. It was really sad. Now even if I listen to songs, I listen to them as part of my work. It’s been so many years, and there are fewer moments when I’m actually touched by music.”
