Singer Alfa Anderson, of the band Chic, died on Dec. 17. She was 78. The Georgia native was a lecturer at Hunter College while singing backup nights and weekends. She joined Chic as a backup singer in 1977, when Norma Jean Wright left the group in 1978, she was promoted to lead (alongside Luci Martin). Anderson was heard on such Chic hits as "Le Freak," Good Times," "My Forbidden Lover," "I Want Your Love," and "At Last I Am Free.” When Chic disbanded in 1983, Anderson returned to backup vocals, for such singers as Bryan Adams, Mick Jagger, Teddy Pendergrass, Jennifer Holliday, and Sheena Easton. She got a Master’s and became principal at a high school in Brooklyn; she also continued to tour with former Chic members Wright and Martin (which made her the world’s coolest high school principal).
