
Birmingham actress and singer Annie Joe Edwards, 76, died on Feb. 11. She was a regular at her hometown’s Encore Theater and Gallery, and also performed on Broadway (Doctor Jazz, Ain’t Misbehavin’ ) and on London’s West End. Her TV and film vehicles included Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo, New York Stories, and Bullets Over Broadway, as well as small roles in In the Heat of the Night, Colors, Leo & Liz in Beverly Hills, Mama Flora’s Family, and Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years. Edwards’ Birmingham Times obit noted that “Her contributions to theater extended beyond performance; she was deeply involved in the arts community, mentoring young actors and musicians while championing cultural representation in the performing arts.”
