Director and writer of high-style weirdness David Lynch, 78, died on Jan. 16, after years of emphysema. Lynch was known chiefly for his dark, New Wave-influenced films such as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, and Wild at Heart; some of his work became incomprehensible Lynch self-parodies, like Mulholland Drive and the later seasons of his smash-hit TV series Twin Peaks (he also wrote and directed the non-Lynchian films Dune and The Elephant Man). But even when his films were baffling (or overly violent or pretentious), they were always entrancing to see. “Film exists because we can go and have experiences that would be pretty dangerous or strange for us in real life,” Lynch said. “We can go into a room and walk into a dream. If we didn't want to upset anyone, we would make films about sewing, but even that could be dangerous.” As for understanding his films, he said that “It's better not to know so much about what things mean. Because the meaning, it's a very personal thing, and the meaning for me is different than the meaning for somebody else.” Lynch was married four times and is survived by four children, including director and writer Jennifer Lynch.
