Brazilian actress and convicted killer Dorinha Duval, 96, died on May 21. Duval started her career as a nightclub dancer, and by the 1950s she was a regular presence on TV. She appeared in the popular telenovelas Irmãos Coragem, Minha Doce Namorada, Selva de Pedra, and O Bem-Amado, as well as in a handful of films. Her first husband was director Daniel Filho; her third was ad man Paulo Sérgio Garcia Alcântara—in 1980, Duval shot and killed the allegedly abusive Alcântara in their Rio de Janeiro home. She was found guilty, and served six years of her 18-year sentence. After her release, Duval wrote her memoirs and became an artist (some Googling suggests that she was quite a good sculptor, and a less-than-gifted painter). Her daughter, Carla Daniel, is also an actress.
