Indie filmmaker Henry Jaglom, 87, died on Sept. 22. Born in London but raised in Manhattan, Jaglom started out as an actor (The Flying Nun, Gidget, Psych-Out) before directing his own films. A Safe Place, with his friends Jack Nicholson and Orson Welles, was his debut, and he followed up with Sitting Ducks, Can She Bake a Cherry Pie?, New Year’s Day, Eating, Last Summer in the Hamptons, and Déjà Vu. His films were often off-the-cuff and meandering; Jaglom’s friendship with his mentor Orson Welles might explain that. “I don't believe in rehearsals,” Jaglom said, “because the best stuff can happen the first time around, and why put yourself in a position when you have to say, 'Oh, damn, I wish I had that on camera!'”
