Film director James Foley, 71, died of brain cancer earlier this week, his family announced on May 8. His films may not have been classic works of art, but they brought in the audience: Reckless, At Close Range, Who's That Girl?, Glengarry Glen Ross; as well as numerous Madonna music videos and two 50 Shades sequels. The native New Yorker graduated from film studies courses at USC. In addition to the films mentioned above, he directed episodes of such TV series as House of Cards and Twin Peaks. “Directing feature films is a strenuous exercise, Foley said. “You're getting up at five in the morning and going at it for 12 or more hours, day after day. It's physically exhausting, and it's tempting to make the safe, conservative choices to get through the day more easily.” His brother, TV director Jerry Foley, died last year.
