Character actor John Lawlor, 83, died on Feb. 13. Lawlor had continuing roles on Phyllis (as one of her coworkers), The Facts of Life (as a season-one headmaster), and 2017’s Western mini-series Godless. He started his career with the Colorado-based Nomad Players, and went on to appear in a handful of movies (Jackson County Jail, The Gumball Rally, Billy Jack Goes to Washington, S.O.B.) and one-offs in countless TV series (Barney Miller, Newhart, Sledge Hammer!, The Bold and the Beautiful, Knots Landing, L.A. Law, Breaking Bad among them). Lawlor also did many commercials, the most famous of which had him assuring his son's invisible friend that Malt-O-Meal was, "Good stuff, Maynard!” Lawlor praised his Facts costar Charlotte Rae, whom he called “one of the finest comediennes in the country. She’s like the old-time troupers: ‘Tell me what to do, and I’ll do it.’” Lawlor was married twice, including to actress Tantoo Cardinal.
