Screenwriter and producer Roberto Orcí, 51, died of kidney disease at his Los Angeles home on Feb. 25. He was 51. Often working with high school friend Alex Kurtzman, the Mexican-born Orcí wrote and/or produced such popular TV shows and movies as Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Trek Beyond, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, Alias, The Proposal, Cowboys & Aliens, Fringe, Ender’s Game, Limitless, Sleepy Hollow, Scorpion, and the Hawaii Five-0 reboot. He was married to producer Melissa Blake and actress Adele Heather Taylor (they were involved in a very messy divorce at the time of his death). Orcí told interviewer Anthony Pascale of 2009’s Star Trek, “They [Paramount] were very open about how they didn’t understand what made Star Trek tick. All that they knew is they wanted to make sure you didn’t have to be a die-hard fan to understand it. That was the only parameter we had. So, it was very blue sky for us, which was both wonderful and horrifying because freedom is terrifying.”
