British cinematographer Roger Pratt, 77, died in late December. He worked with directors Terry Gilliam (Brazil, The Fisher King, 12 Monkeys), Mike Leigh (High Hopes), Richard Attenborough (Shadowlands, In Love and War) Kenneth Branagh (Frankenstein), and Tim Burton (Batman), and was Oscar-nominated for The End of the Affair. Pratt also lensed Chocolat, and two Harry Potters (the goblet and the chamber ones). Frequent and early collaborator Terry Gilliam said, “I was pushing [Pratt] to be a full-time cinematographer, but he was hesitant to move forward too quickly. He was not concerned with advancing his career so much as about learning the craft and feeling very comfortable in himself. I totally respected that. Too many people jump before they can fly.”
