Salon.com, 1995 – 2026
The news and culture website Salon bid us goodbye on Nov. 5. Salon was one of those sites I had bookmarked and checked daily (though I am still old, and watch the nightly local and national news at night). Salon, Jezebel, AV Club, HuffPo, and Gothamist gave me my fill of what was going on in the world, though of course I found myself dealing with lack of editing and proofreading, and very young correspondents who got hysterical at things I learned to shrug off decades ago. “Salon was never just a website,” its goodbye post read. “It was an idea about what journalism could be, born at a moment when the internet was still a largely unexplored frontier. The business realities of independent digital journalism have changed profoundly over the years. After careful consideration, we have reached the difficult decision that our publishing model is no longer sustainable.” I’ll miss Salon, and am still mourning the loss of the “Mary Worth and Me” and “Television Without Pity” sites.
