Singer Sam Moore, of Sam & Dave, died on Jan. 10. He was 89. Sam was the higher voice and Dave Prater (who died in 1988) took the lower notes; from 1961 through about 1980, they recorded such hits as “Soul Man,” “Hold On, I'm Comin’,” You Don't Know Like I Know,” “I Thank You,” and “When Something Is Wrong with My Baby.” Sam & Dave had ten top-20 singles, and they were a cross-over hit with white audiences, too. Moore also sang with such artists as Wilson Pickett, Conway Twitty, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Lou Reed, Mariah Carey, and Marty Stuart. The death of Dave (in a car accident) and his outspoken politics slowed Moore’s career, but he was still performing as recently as 2023. Moore told interviewer Gary James, “if you're gonna sing, sing! Tell the story. If you're gonna move, try to move as you're telling the story and if you feel it, fine! I don't want you to just stand there like a stick. I like a person that can control, sing to the audience. They're the ones that paid their hard earned money to come to see you. Give them what they paid for. Give them a complete you. Whatever you're singing, whatever you're doing on stage, but you don't need to do all that nasty, fall on the floor, playing with your crotch. You don't need to do that.”

He got his start as part of the doo-wopp group, The Majestics. Also, he resided in Arizona for awhile and is part of the Arizona Music Hall of Fame. https://youtu.be/P9iI3ulx71M?si=0qj5wh4lOWLBgLho
