Child and teen actor Claude Jarman, Jr., who won an Oscar for The Yearling, died on Jan. 12. He was 90. Jarman was a “civilian” when discovered during a talent search for the role in the 1946 film, directed by Clarence Brown and starring Gregory Peck as Jarman’s father. After winning a “juvenile Oscar,” Jarman continued acting through the 1950s, though his career never really took off. He was seen in High Barbaree, Intruder in the Dust, Rio Grande, Hangman’s Knot, Fair Wind to Java, and several other films and TV shows. In later years, he was director of cultural affairs for the City of San Francisco, and founded Jarman Travel, Inc. While at MGM, he attended school with his fellow child stars: “I had nothing to compare it to,” he later reminisced. “I thought, ‘Doesn’t everyone have this?’ I had my own dressing room, my own makeup person and wardrobe person.”
