Voice-over actor Dave Mallow, 76, died on March 11. After long career as Midwestern radio announcer, he moved to L.A. and was able to get a good foothold as a voice actor. Mallow voiced countless cartoons, including the English-language versions of anime. He had continuing roles in such shows as Noozles, Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years, V.R. Troopers, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (as Baboo), Tenchi in Tokyo, Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran, X, Digimon, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, Eureka Seven, Eyeshield 21, Kyô kara maô!, and El Chavo, among many others. “I've never aspired to on-camera or stage roles,” Mallow told interviewer Chris McFeely, “so I've always differentiated what I do from the work of your basic actor-clone. While it does come down to acting ability, the term I would choose would be 'voice artist.' After twelve years as a disc jockey/air personality, it seemed a logical progression to segue into commercials, narration, post-production voice work for film and television, and that's also when film dubbing raised its nasty little head. The first step was learning the ropes in the area of commercials. Made a demo tape. Got an agent. Went on auditions. Met casting directors. You do what it takes to become a known commodity and hope for the best.”
