Charmingly fey actress Diane Keaton, 79, has died, her family announced on Oct. 11. She was best known for her films with Woody Allen (Annie Hall, which made her a fashion icon, Play it Again, Sam, which she also played on Broadway, Sleeper, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Love and Death, Manhattan). She got her start on Broadway in Hair (as the only cast member who refused to appear nude), and after some TV and movie starlet roles, broke out in The Godfather. She continued starring successfully through last year, mostly (though not always) in comic roles: Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Reds, Mrs. Soffel, Crimes of the Heart, Baby Boom, The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give, Book Club. “Of course I recognized myself in the roles Woody wrote,” she once said. “I mean, in Annie Hall particularly. I was this sort of novice who had lots of feelings but didn't know how to express herself, and I see that in Annie. I think Woody used a kind of essential quality that he found in me at that time, and I'm glad he did because it worked really well in the movie.” Keaton recently admitted, “I'm limited, so, I kind of know where I fit as an actress. I kind of get it now, finally, after all of these years of trying to be a dramatic actress.”
