Heavy metal rocker John Sykes, 65, died of cancer on Jan. 20. The singer, guitarist and songwriter was best known for his work with Whitesnake (1984-87), Thin Lizzy (1982-83), Blue Murder (1989-94), and Tygers of Pan Tang (the early ’80s). Named as one of Guitar World’s "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists of All Time,” Sykes was born in Reading (England, not Pennsylvania), he called himself “a blues player who plays rock.” Blunt magazine called Sykes “a complete force of nature. From the blistering riffs on Whitesnake’s ‘1987’ to his contributions to Thin Lizzy’s ‘Thunder and Lightning,’ Sykes moulded the sounds of a generation.”
