Peter Byrne, 1952 – 2026

British singer Peter Byrne, of the New Wave pop group Naked Eyes, died on Sept. 14. He was 74. Byrne most famously sang lead on the 1983 cover of the 1963 hit "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me,” to which I danced many a night at Limelight and Palladium back in the day (I loved ‘80s dance music). Byrne and his college pal Rob Fisher formed Naked Eyes in 1982, and also had hits with “Promises Promises,” "When the Lights Go Out," and "(What) In the Name of Love." The group broke up in 1984; Fisher died in 1999. Byrne continued performing and recording, both solo and with new Naked Eyes bandmates. He told writer Jonas Warstad of his biggest hit, “I had always loved this song, so we called a friend who had the record, he read the lyric over the phone and we put it together from memory. The record was recorded at Abbey Road, and we were invited to a party downstairs, with Paul McCartney and many other stars. When we returned upstairs to the studio around one a.m., I decided to have a go at the vocal. It was the first time I have ever recorded a vocal in one take, and probably the last!”
