Big blond character actor Angus MacInnes, 77, died on Dec. 23. The Canadian native appeared in numerous films and TV shows from 1975 through 2016; his Viking looks often got him cast as authority figures, thugs and soldiers. His most famous role was as the unnamed Gold Leader in Star Wars, but he was also seen in Rollerball, Superman II, Judge Dredd, Eyes Wide Shut, Hellboy, Atlantic City, and Captain Phillips, among many others. Of his brief but memorable Star Wars role, MacInnes recalled that George Lucas wanted him to read his lines with no one cuing him. “And so we started shooting and it was just a nightmare. I couldn't remember anything without the cues. I needed that other voice to respond to, so I kept trying. I was so panicked at that point that I would have done anything. If he'd said, 'You need some heroin,' I would have rolled my sleeve up. There's no performance -- in that sense -- at all. It's just reading lines and I thought, 'I don't care. I've just got to get out of here.'”
