British operatic soprano April Cantelo, 96, died recently, it was just reported by OperaWire. Cantelo made countless records, and appeared onstage in such modern and classic vehicles as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, The Happy Prince, Der Geduldige Socrates, English Eccentrics, Les Nuits d'Eté, Pastoral Symphony, and Boulevard Solitude. The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians calls her “a very gifted singing actress,” describing her voice as “a pure, clear lyrical soprano, not large, but capable of flexibility and variety of expression.” Cantelo married conductor Colin Davis in 1949; he later left her for their au pair.
