Emilio Echevarría, 1944 – 2025

Mexican actor Emilio Echevarría, 80, died on Jan. 4. Among his most noted films were Amores Perros, Y tu Mamá También, Babel, Die Another Day, and The Alamo. Echevarría was working as an accountant, when, he recalled, “One day, when I was 31, I received a phone call from a woman friend inviting me to be in a play. She knew I wasn’t an actor. I told her I worked all day at my office. She told me rehearsals and shows were at night. I asked no further and I took up the invitation. At the first rehearsal, I knew that that was the most pleasurable calling and work I could do.” Besides movies, he costarred in such TV series as Sexo y Otros Secretos, Los Simuladores, and El Encanto del Aguila (why aren’t words in foreign film titles initial-capped? That is just wrong). Among his survivors is his actress daughter, Lourdes Echevarría.
