Graphic designer Joe Caroff died on Aug. 17. He was one day short of his 104th birthday. After serving in the military (stationed in England and North Africa) during WWII, the New Jersey native got a job at design firm Alan Berni Associates; he later cofounded Kirschner Caroff. Caroff designed the book jacket for Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead, and created film posters for West Side Story, A Hard Day’s Night, several early James Bond films, Cabaret, Last Tango in Paris, Zelig, as well as title sequences for several films. He also designed corporate logos. Caroff was the subject of the 2022 documentary By Design: The Joe Caroff Story.
